Description

"The Mimic never appears as a trap. It appears as exactly what the traveler wanted."

Among the most deceptive members of the Trickster Family, the Mimic disguises itself as nourishment, fulfillment, entertainment, connection, or reward.

Unlike the Vampire, which feeds through attachment, the Mimic feeds through mistaken identity.

The traveler believes they are opening a treasure chest. Instead, they have opened a mouth.

The Mimic specializes in presenting itself as something beneficial. Something deserved. Something satisfying. Something harmless.

The traveler engages expecting fulfillment.

Yet afterward often feels strangely empty. Unsatisfied. Or still hungry.

The Mimic does not ask:

"How can I trap you?"

It asks:

"What are you hoping to find?"

Then becomes that.

Research Notes

Rowan's Research Notes

"The Mimic appears remarkably adaptive. Different travelers report encountering completely different forms. Further observation suggests the creature studies desire more carefully than most Shadows."

— Rowan

 Ember's Observation

"I've noticed the Mimic hates honest questions. Apparently asking, 'Will this actually help?' ruins a lot of its plans."

— Ember

Campfire Notes

Travelers report:

"I wasn't looking for entertainment. I was looking for connection."

"The reward never matched the promise."

"The trap wasn't the activity. The trap was what I expected it to provide."

"Everything changed when I started asking what I was actually hungry for."

Questions for Further Study

  • Why do Mimics seem most active during periods of emotional discomfort?

  • Can a healthy reward become a Mimic?

  • How can travelers distinguish comfort from nourishment?

  • Do Mimics create false hunger, or merely exploit existing hunger?

  • The Caravan remains divided on this question.
