Field Notes from the Road
Some Shadows frighten travelers. Others confuse them. The Hunger Family does neither. They invite. They promise. They whisper that what you seek is only one more step away. One more purchase. One more relationship. One more achievement. One more chance. One more sacrifice.
Unlike many Shadow Families, the Hunger Family rarely begins with pain. It begins with desire. A completely human desire. To be loved. To matter. To belong. To feel alive. To finally arrive.
The Hunger Family has learned that starvation is not always caused by having too little.
Sometimes it begins by convincing travelers that nothing they already possess could ever be enough.
Shared Characteristics
Though each member appears very different, they seem to share several unusual traits.
Most Hunger creatures: Feed on longing. Magnify dissatisfaction. Promise completion. Blur the difference between desire and need. Offer immediate relief while creating deeper emptiness. Rarely steal directly.
Instead...
They persuade travelers to hand over their attention, hope, identity, or energy willingly.
This appears to be their greatest strength. Most victims believe every choice was entirely their own.
Why They Are Difficult to Recognize
Most Shadows look dangerous. The Hunger Family often looks beautiful. Hopeful. Exciting. Comforting. Necessary.
Travelers frequently mistake encounters for: love, motivation, ambition, passion, success, comfort, or destiny.
Many of those things are genuinely good. That is precisely what makes these Shadows so difficult to notice. Healthy desire brings life. Hunger without discernment consumes it.
One traveler described the difference this way: "Healthy desires point me toward life. Hunger tells me life begins somewhere else."
I have yet to find a better description.

Instead, it convinces them to keep refining, revising, improving, and preparing until action becomes impossible.

After years of Caravan reports, another pattern has begun to emerge. The Hunger Family does not appear interested in destroying travelers. It appears interested in keeping them perpetually unsatisfied. No achievement lasts. No relationship feels complete. No success becomes enough. No amount of attention quiets the need for more. The destination continually moves. The meal never satisfies. The thirst always returns.
Perhaps this explains why members of this family often appear together. A traveler loses hope. The Lantern Eater arrives. A dazzling new promise appears. The Siren sings.
The traveler clings to the promise long after it begins draining them. The Vampire feeds. Different creatures.
One appetite.
