Description

"The Gelatinous Drift rarely blocks a traveler's path. It simply makes stopping feel easier."

Among the most deceptively gentle members of the Fog Family, the Gelatinous Drift feeds upon comfort, inertia, and passive stagnation.

Unlike the Fog Walker, which dulls awareness, or the Endless Scroll, which captures attention, the Drift encourages stillness.

Not restorative stillness. Not intentional rest. Comfortable stagnation.

The traveler begins postponing small acts of effort. Tomorrow becomes next week. Next week becomes someday.

The Drift does not convince travelers they cannot move. Only that movement can wait. For now.

The creature appears harmless because its influence often feels pleasant.

Warm. Comfortable. Safe.

Many travelers fail to recognize the Drift until they notice how long they have remained in the same place.

Research Notes

Rowan's Research Notes

"The Gelatinous Drift appears to thrive where comfort becomes unquestioned. Rest seems to weaken many Shadows. Curiously, excessive comfort appears to strengthen this one."

— Rowan

 Ember's Observation

"I've noticed the Drift hates tiny victories. Apparently even a five-minute quest counts as an act of rebellion."

— Ember

Campfire Notes

Travelers report:

"I wasn't unhappy. I was just stuck."

"Everything felt easier to postpone."

"The hardest part was starting."

"Momentum returned much faster than I expected."

Questions for Further Study

  • At what point does rest become stagnation?

  • Why does comfort become a trap for some travelers but a refuge for others?

  • Is motivation the cause of movement, or the result of it?

  • The Caravan remains divided on this question.
